Helen came to Dunedin, New Zealand, from Scotland on the ship Henrietta in 1860 with her parents. She married Henry Cassey in 1861 and they lived in the Blueskin Bay area in a dab and punga hut. 

They had nine children and all but one survived to adulthood – Charles died aged two from burns. At some stage they moved to Mihiwaka to farm.
Helen died in 1904 aged 69.
