The right to vote is still contested. In early 2017, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren was reading into US Senate records a testimony by Coretta Scott King about suppression of voting rights, and was formally silenced by Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell. Memorably, he later told the press that he had explained to her she needed to be quiet, “nevertheless she persisted”.
