Person honouring: Ida Kathleen Powell

Relationship to maker: Maternal grandmother

Ida was born in Stoke near Nelson on 4 June 1892. Her grandparents Richard and Jane Ching came from Cornwall in England. They sailed into Nelson on the Will Watch on 4 November 1841, the first immigrants to arrive in Nelson.

After Ida married my grandfather, James Powell, they moved around the district picking hops and working in orchards. Later they leased some land and worked their own orchard next to Stoke Primary School. Church was a big part of Ida’s life, hence the cross by her name.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren, especially when we flew kites in the park behind their house in Songer St, Stoke. She was always ready for hugs when I called in to see her after school. Ida bringing scones out of the wood and coal range for afternoon tea are lovely memories.

Ida had three children: Iris (my mother), Jean, and Keith. Ida was a breast cancer survivor. A lovely, kind, and wise lady. She is deeply missed.

Ida died on 6 November 1962 and was buried at Seaview Rd cemetery. Her husband followed in 1967.

Panel materials: Linen-look fabric obtained from the stash at Vinnies resew. The beads / embroidery thread were my own, photo of Ida on her wedding day- put onto steam-a-seam and put on to fabric with a hot iron.
