Edith Kilford was born in Crystal Brook, South Australia in 1880. In 1910, she married Jonathan Brown, who was a school teacher and headmaster in various parts of the lower North Island. They had four children, my mother Ina being the youngest (born 1923).
Edith died in 1958 aged 78 years.
Panel materials: Bed sheet from my mother’s trousseau. It was a quality fabric but with repeated boilings and washing in a copper, it had become tough and was hard to get a needle to pass through. Tape lace from a lace tutor in Bruges, who was interested to hear the ancient craft was being done in New Zealand. The colours were Grandma’s favourite; she disliked to wear the traditional black that widows and older women wore. My mother and I inherited her love of wearing colour!
