Jane Hammond was the eldest child of Amelia and Richard Hammond. She was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England in 1840 and arrived in Wellington in 1842 with her parents. She lived in Kaiwharawhara and moved with her family to Tutaenui village (later Marton) in 1858.
In 1861 she married a neighbour’s son, William Kirby Smith Cawood. In 1860 they had their only daughter Emma Amelia.
Cherry Farm, the house that she and her husband built in the early 1880s, is still standing in Lower Bevan Street, Marton.
Jane was 66 when she died in 1906.
