Eliza ‘Lizzie’ Guiney was born in Dromore, County Down in Northern Ireland in 1851.
Lizzie was the fourth-eldest daughter of Ann and James Guiney, who with their eight children emigrated to New Zealand in 1862 on board the Queen of Mersey. The family settled in Canterbury, where Lizzie met Robert Hawthorne – they married in 1870. They farmed in the area before relocating to Hawke’s Bay.
Robert was listed in the street directory as a hop-beer maker when Lizzie signed the petition in 1893. They briefly moved to Dannevirke and ran a store before retiring to Hastings. Together they had nine children – seven sons and two daughters.
Lizzie died in 1922, aged 71.
