Martha Williams is one of a number of petition supporters who, it is assumed, could not write and probably could not read either as it shows a cross and the words’ “Her mark” next to her name and to that of Caroline Andrews, the name above Martha’s. The signature below Martha’s is Mary Ann Littlejohn and the handwriting of all three names is similar. Is it possible that Caroline and Martha were in some way connected to Mary Ann?
