Helen Cuthill was the daughter of Mary Cuthill and John Cuthill. 

She was born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire on the 27th September 1867. She came to NZ with her mother and sister on the ship ‘Timaru’ which left Scotland in 1874 and arrived at Port Chalmers in 1875. 

She did not marry and took over the running of her mother’s hosiery factory upon her death in 1901. Helen Cuthill died on the 6th June 1934 and is buried alongside her mother and sister in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin. 

Panel materials: Vintage fabrics from my collection, plus some tartan that came from a pair of Scottish pants, worn over a 100 years ago which I was restyling or a client. They had been her Grandfathers. Embroidery thread was my mothers, paper college of stockings, an advertisement seeking staff by Miss Cuthill.
