Mary Frew was born in Scotland about 1852; her younger siblings were born in Victoria and New Zealand. She moved to New Zealand before the age of 12, settling with her family in Riverton.
In 1874 at the age of 22 she married Charles Frentz, a Danish farmer, and they settled at Orepuki in Southland. They had two children, Margaret [1881] and Rudolph [1885].
Mary died in 1911 at the age of 59 and was buried at Orepuki cemetery. She left her estate, valued at under £700, to her children.
