Mary Craig was born in Cockermouth, Cumberland, in 1842. At the age of 22, she married James Joss, a Scotsman, and they emigrated to New Zealand.

When he was 34, James died of an accidental shooting, leaving Mary with five children, two of whom they had adopted, in Upper Moutere.

In 1879, Mary married Henry Trillo, a labourer, and they had another five children. Mary died in 1915, aged 71.
