Mary Kerr wed George Templeton in Selkirk in 1871. The couple came to New Zealand in 1874 on the ship Canterbury and landed in Lyttelton. They lived in Kaiapoi and had 11 children.
George worked at the Kaiapoi woollen mills as a mechanic. Mary signed the suffrage petition while living in Kaiapoi, and enrolled to vote in later elections when there.
Mary was 89 when she died in 1941 at her daughter’s home in Temuka; she was buried with George (d 1922), closer to Kaiapoi.
