Barbara Tate was born in 1859 in Sunderland, England, the sixth child of Thomas and Barbara Tate. Aged 19, she married John Lemmon, a carpenter, in Sunderland, UK on 18 May 1879. 

Soon after their marriage, Barbara and John sailed to New Zealand arriving on 9 Sept 1879 on the Famenoth. They had five children William Thomas Lemmon, 1880: Barbara Emily Lemmon 1881; John Lemmon 1883; Elizabeth Winspear Lemmon 1884 and Hazel Havelock Lemmon 1892. Nothing has been discovered about Barbara’s personal life but as she had a large family with several grandchildren, there may be living descendants who can add to her story.
