Lucy Ellen Burt was born in August 1850 in Tiverton, England. Her parents were Susannah and George Burt a contractor.
Lucy travelled to New Zealand on the Matoaka, arriving in Canterbury in February 1869; she was listed as a general servant.
In August 1869 Lucy married Alfred Augustus Wood, a farmer at St Pauls Church at Leithfield, North Canterbury.
They had 13 children between 1870 and 1891.
Lucy died at Amberley in November 1908 from heart disease, aged 58 years. She was buried with an infant son William John and her husband at Balcairn cemetery, Amberley.
Henrietta Wood was born in August 1870 at Leithfield. Lucy and Alfred Wood’s first child.
In April 1893 Henrietta married Samuel Sandford at the Registrar’s Office, Rakaia. She signed the suffrage petition at Amberley, but enrolled for the 1893 election at Rakaia.
Henrietta died in November 1918 from influenza, at Christchurch Hospital, aged 49. She was buried at Sydenham cemetery, Christchurch.
