Jane Mark was born in 1846 in Wigton, Cumberland, England to Jane Bell and Thomas Mark.
In 1867 she married Prussian-born mariner Captain John Aschman. They had two sons and four daughters.
Jane was the president of the Lyttelton Women’s Christian Temperance Union in 1889; she signed the suffrage petition and enrolled to vote in the 1893 election.
Jane was only 49 when she died in 1895, 12 years after her husband. Both were buried at Lyttelton’s public cemetery.
The local paper reported that she “devoted much of her life … in good and noble work amongst the suffering and unfortunate portion of the community.”
