Maria Sophia Pope emigrated from England but became widowed after she arrived in Christchurch. She began a business with her daughter Sarah selling English periodicals. Their business was so successful she was able to expand into all kinds of items and open at several locations. Pope suffered losses such as her business burning to the ground after the neighbouring businessman murdered his partner and tried to cover it up by setting fire to the premises! However the Popes were able to continue their business and the were very successful operating until the 1990s.
