Born in Castlemaine Victoria, Australia in 1863, Isabella McKay Matheson moved to Dunedin with her parents while still a child. She lived in The Glen, Mornington until her marriage to John George Stevens of Beaumont Station, Gummies Bush near Riverton. 

A keen voter she was registered on the electoral role every year till her death in 1922.
