Maud Ellen Smythe was born in 1870. . It is thought that perhaps she sailed with her father Joseph Smythe from UK to Victoria, Australia, then to Nelson, New Zealand. Or more probably Maud travelled later with her aunts Emily and Edith. 

Her occupation was listed as domestic duties and there are a few photos showing her wearing beautiful dresses when she was younger. It also seems she had a fondness for cats, as she is pictured cuddling a cat in later photos.  She died in 1957.
