Amelia Martha Crowther nee Sherwin is believed to have been born in Collingwood, Australia, sometime between 1856 and 1858. According to a newspaper obituary she came to New Zealand with her parents (Peter Henry Sherwin and Caroline Maryann Sherwin nee Bunting) on 1863 on the ‘Omer’.
On 14 February 1877, she married George Oates Crowther. Her first child, Peter George, was born three months later. Another eleven children followed. Amelia must have known great sadness in her life as three of her children died when less than one year old (Clara King, Elsie Josephine and Cecil Rhodes), Peter George died at 13 months, Amanda Valentine died aged 3, Florence Oates died aged 7 and Rosamond Elizabeth was 14 when she passed away. Amelia’s husband George was a bootmaker and they lived in Maori Hill in Dunedin. Amelia died in 1919 aged 63.
